Stigma

Whilst the biomedical model has been the dominant discourse since the serendipitous discovery of antipsychotic medication in the 1950s (Shen 1999), some believe that it pathologises the individual and is a damaging way to view and respond to a person’s experiences (Beresford 2015). For example, if someone is experiencing problems such as prolonged low mood, reduced interest in pleasurable activities, disrupted sleep and eating patterns, difficulty concentrating and feelings of worthlessness, it is plausible to think that a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, explained by an imbalance in serotonin levels, might reduce stigma by promoting sympathy and understanding, as the person is suffering from an illness just like any other. However, Deacon and Baird (2009) found that when participants in their study were presented with the chemical imbalance explanation of a person’s problems they were actually more stigmatising, seeing the person as having a serious illness, and being dangerous and unlikely to recover, which may lead to social rejection. On the other hand, when Read and Law (1999) presented participants with information about psychosocial factors contributing to mental distress, there was less stigma.
